Pendant Light Height Over a Dining Table

Pendant Light Height Over a Dining Table

The right hanging height transforms a pendant from a light source into a defining moment in a room. Too high, and the warmth is lost. Too low, and the fixture becomes an obstruction. Here is how to find the exact position that makes both the light and the table feel right.

The Standard: 28–34 Inches Above the Tabletop

For standard 8-foot ceilings, hang the bottom of the pendant 28–34 inches above the dining table surface. This keeps the light within the conversation zone — close enough to feel intimate, high enough to avoid glare across the table.

The midpoint, around 30–32 inches, works for most domestic settings and most pendant sizes.

Adjusting for Ceiling Height

Every additional foot of ceiling height above 8 feet calls for raising the pendant by 3 inches. This maintains the visual relationship between fixture and table, even as the room’s scale increases.

Ceiling Height Bottom of Pendant Above Table
8 feet (standard) 28–34 inches
9 feet 31–37 inches
10 feet 34–40 inches
12 feet 40–46 inches

Multiple Pendants Over One Table

For long dining tables, a trio of smaller pendants often reads better than a single large fixture. Space them evenly — roughly one-third of the table length apart — and align the bottom of each pendant at the same height. Consistency is everything.

For tables over 72 inches, two or three pendants avoid the visual weight of an oversized single fixture while creating a rhythm that feels deliberate.

The View From the Table

Sit at your dining table and look straight ahead. The pendant should not intersect your sightline to the person across from you. If it does, raise it by 2–3 inches. The goal is for the light to frame the table — not divide it.

Choose a warm bulb at 2700K for the most flattering, welcoming light at the dining table. It complements food, skin tones, and natural materials equally well.

A well-hung pendant does something no overhead fixture can: it draws people in. Get the height right, and the table becomes the centre of the room.
